Which questions did you ask me? Can you repost as I will be delighted to answer them. I do not run away! If I cannot answer you I will tell you but will not ignore a question directed at my person.

Going now to the current matter: I am not suggesting anything big. I understand the politics on the ground well. Even us, as SLPP members, are being sometimes sabbotaged for fear of individual power. That is not where I am looking at. I am looking at little things for local people that count. This could be done through local groups of the APC affiliates. Certain rules of governbance is not to be seen as someone trying to usurp or undermine power from the ruling government. The issue concerning the FCC and gabbage collection was a policy constructed by the donors. The same is with most of the other ministries. My party, the SLPP, is suffering from thge lack of trust by donors as they believe that funds will be misappropriated. They aim to lessen this stance once confidence is instilled.

We all need to come together to put forward a national agenda that every party subscribes to and not deviate from even when in power. It does not matter how they get to it but the national agenda must continue to flow. How do you think the west we so admire continue to thrive inspite of change of governments? They have a progressive national agenda. Every government has to follow such to appease the electorate.

A Sierra Leonean paper recently posted information on the internet that the APC's leading horseman, Mr. Ernest Koroma, has given a liberal amount of money for the construction of a mosque in Northern Sierra Leone. In my opinion, this piece of news was given a tinge of controversy when it was revealed that Ernest Koroma's generosity was directed at the Hezbollah movement in Sierra Leone! The Sierra Leone-based Hezbollah organization may not be a terrorist organization. However, its Middle Eastern forebears are openly militant and committed to armed confrontation with anything that resembles "Western decadence." In other wordds, Hezbollah is an extremist organization with a decidedly extreme political agenda that hides behind anti-Zionist resistance.

I do not know the extent of Mr. Koroma's grasp of global politics. However, he should know by sheer common sense, that in an election year, every move by a politician normally comes under intrusive analysis. After all, perception counts so much in politics that even a politician's gestures during conversations, are put under scrutiny. Politically speaking, how STRATEGIC was Mr. Koroma in giving millions of leones to an organization that launders money from questionable sources? Was Mr. Koroma doing this to endear himself to Sierra Leonean Muslims?
Assuming that the Right Honourable Gentleman was doing that to look politically lovable in Muslim eyes, was there not a more strategic way of doing that? Sierra Leonean sensibilities are very mild when it comes to religion. Mr. Koroma could have been more strategic with his {political?} generosity by giving such amounts to a non-religious group in full view of the press. He could have won some admirers without necessarily appearing to be too "cozy" with a branch of Islam that is more militant than religious. Still, his monetary gift could have helped more poor people had he directed his generosity at anything order than the building of a Hezbollah-owned mosque.

If I were an adviser to the leader of my political party, I will tell my political boss that it is ill-advisable to give generous amounts of money in an election year to anything that even slightly smells of Hezbollah. Given that Mr. Koroma regularly comes to the United States, how will he fend off charges from a news-seeking, Western reporter asking him to explain his perceived coziness with Hezbolah?

A good observation Sir Olu. However, cocorioko needs to do more to influence policies. Certain issues discussed here should be taken up by cocorioko and a team of volunteers to follow these issues through to see their outcome - be they positive or negative to the whole.

Public opinion, even in Sierra Leone politics should not be underestimated. Cocorioko, is now tipe to influence posiive changes with the support of its people.

You should not say that you should become PRESIDENT of SIERRA LEONE before you can do somethinmg better for Sierra Leone.

As for what concerns professionslity, some of us are doing our very best. We also bear in mind that KABS and his STAFF will correct us if we go wrong or touch issues that will bring problems. He takes immediate action. We know that, that is resposible journalism.

Do candidates seeking to be president of Sierra Leone undergo medical checkups? If not it is a very big disaster. This is a very big issue particularly for the highest office in the land.

Sierra Leone has undergone many problems in the past and we donot want to see the masses suffer anymore. How for god's sake can people file for candidacy to STATE HOUSE without proper MEDICAL CHECKUP.

You see, there are all sorts of rumours around that somebody is sick.

Could the constitution be ammended to allow scrutiny especially on medical grouds for people seeking STATE HOUSE?

One thing is certain, ERNEST KOROMA is healthy because I speak every time with his doctor. We have the same medical doctor. So he is cleared.

Having the same doctor does not mean that the doctor will release medical informations.

My arguement was on the credibility of both the doctor and ERNEST. If ERNEST KOROMA was sick, I am 100% sure that he will not put his candidacy for the presidential bid. He should have declined and ask somebody alse.

The moment I saw ERNEST KOROMA presenting himself, I knew that he was clear of all allegations that may arise from MEDICAL, CORRUPTION and MORALITY. If ERNEST was sick and cannot execute the duties of a HEAD OF STATE, then he would have declined in the first place. You see, we are talking of credibility here. This is what the NEW APC is all about.

TESTIMONIES FROM SIERRA LEONEAN VICTIMS OF REBEL ABUSES

Fatmata, l1, who lives within a displaced near Port Loko, was one of three children abducted on January 25 when they'd gone in search of food and wood. Both she and her 12 year old friend Kadi were raped by the rebels. She described her abduction which lasted for nearly three weeks:

We went to find wood and potato leaves in a village called Mathiaka…one of the men grabbed me, I got away but then more of them came and surrounded us. They beat me, hit me hard on the back of the neck with a gun and then later gave me a bushel of rice to carry to their camp in Rofurawa. The one who caught made me pound rice and wash his clothes and he was the one who had sex with me. I begged him to let me go to my people but he said "I'm going to have sex with you until they disarm us." I wanted so much to escape but I didn't know the bush around that place and he kept saying he'd kill me if I ever tried to get away. Some days I complained to his wife. She was so nice….she sympathized and said she too had been abducted. I was with them for twenty days. I was bleeding so much and still feel so weak. I'm only 11 years old…I haven't even seen my period yet.

Haja, seventeen, was one of ten young women taken off a bus after being ambushed near Rogberi by rebel soldiers on Jan 17. She described how all ten were abducted and later raped:

I was on my way up-country to attend my father's funeral when at around l0:30 am a group of about 40 rebels with RPG's [rocket-propelled grenades], guns and machetes stopped us and forced the driver to go off the road until we reached an abandoned village. He ordered us to come down and walk single file inside a house. We were so frightened and some were crying, so he said, "Why are you crying? Are you bereaved? Because now we're going to cut your throats so you'll really have something to cry over." The rebels searched us and separated all the young girls from the rest of the group. Then they walked the ten of us to another abandoned village where they made us sit and started calling us into a house one by one. The first one was a girl named Isatu. We saw five of them go in and heard her crying. I was the third to be called. They told me to lie down on a dirty brown cloth. I said I don't know man business. I started bleeding after the first one and screamed that I was going to die. I pleaded with them but they told me to shut up and that they'd do what ever they wanted with me. Four of them used me that day. I just prayed, "Father save me from these people and return me safely to my home."

Abu, an elder from the village Lalbanka, was one of seven people abducted by the rebels on February 14 and forced to carry zinc roofing panels stripped from abandoned villages. An elderly woman, also abducted from his village, was severely beaten and later shot because she was unable to carry the load. Abu described what happened:

At 3:00 pm I'd gone into the field to use the toilet and on my way back they surrounded me. They led me at gunpoint and I saw that six more people from the nearby villages of Lalsoso and Yingesa had also been caught. First they forced us to take zinc panels off the houses and then they gave us bundles of 20 to carry. My neighbor, Hawa, tried walking with that big bundle but she couldn't and dropped it along the way. Then they took away some of the load and told her to walk but some time later she just collapsed from exhaustion. Two of them started beating her with sticks. They made us stand around and watch. They ordered her to dance and to kiss them. She tried but blood was streaming out of her head. I am a village elder and she came over and grabbed onto my pants and said "They're killing me..help me." I said she was my daughter-in-law and begged them to stop but they said they would kill me too. We left her there -- unconscious and bleeding -- with one rebel. Later that night that rebel, who called himself "Junior," boasted that he had killed her and told us that that is what happens to the ones who don't work. She was the mother of six and grandma of seven. I still had her blood from where she held onto my pants.

According to testimonies by other abductees, her decomposing body was later shown to them as an example of why they should not run away or defy the orders of the rebels.

Hassan, thirty-five, described how his daughter was abducted in a raid on Mabenkia Village on January 10, and how his brother was killed a few weeks later when they ventured back to see if the village was safe.

At around 5:00 pm I was with my children when about 60 of them in full uniform and with guns and RPG's surprised us. We all ran into the bushes and from where I was hiding I saw my sixteen year old daughter being dragged away by those people and heard them shouting about President Tejan Kabbah not having given them what they wanted. We fled to a displaced camp near Freetown with the rest of my family but because we didn't have enough to eat, my brothers, cousins and I decided to venture back to try to salvage some of what we'd planted and to see if it was safe to return. We went by canoe but were unfortunately caught from behind – the rebels had another canoe and they held us under gun point until we reached the shore. As we were arriving, one rebel shot my twenty-year-old brother Mani. He fell, wounded into the shallow water and as we jumped down to try to rescue him, the rebel yelled "Don't touch him. Get up – I'm going to finish you." And then he shot him at close range. Then another rebel came and grabbed my ten-year-old cousin who stated screaming "Don't let him kill me," but the rebel told us he wanted the boy. Then they ordered us to leave and said, "That body is going to rot here and if you ever came back to try and bury him, we'll kill you all." Now we're displaced people with no fishing nets or boats. All I want is to see my daughter and to go back to our village. What kind of ceasefire, what kind of peace is this?

Twelve-year-old Osman, who lives in an internally-displaced-persons (IDP) camp near Port Loko, was abducted at the end of January in Mathakan village, when he and his sister ventured out to pick cassava. Before being able to escape, five days later he was given military training by rebels who identified themselves as being both ex-SLA and RUF. He described the training:

While in Furawa camp, which they call "combat camp," they took five of us for military training. We were all given war names; I was called "Ceasefire," and the other boys who were all about my age were called "Stop the War," "Gunshot," "Lay Ambush," and "Roughneck." The commander gathered us for training in the early morning every morning, and taught us how to load, cock, clean and shoot an AK-47. I even fired it in the air one day. They taught us how to salute, stand at attention and said, "Don't worry about going home to your people...We'll provide for your education." They said they were training us so we'll be part of the rebel force, and that they weren't leaving the rebel life until after the elections. I didn't like the idea of war, of all this. I just wanted to go home to my people.

Vandi, was one of fourteen men abducted from a coal pit in Lalsoso on February 20. He was used as slave labor for six days and forced to work long hours removing zinc panels off the roofs of houses in abandoned villages. He described how the panels were then sold to individual soldiers from both ECOMOG and the loyal Sierra Leonean Army. He had whip marks in at least five places on his neck, arms and face where he said he'd been beaten by the rebels.

We went village to village unroofing the houses. The rebels would sit down and watch us as we worked and then force us to walk long hours; sometimes throughout the night, with 25 zinc panels on our heads. Sometimes I could barely move and they would beat me with a whip or the blunt end of the machete. Their base was Gberi-bana. An hour before reaching the main road, where they sold the panels for 1000 leones (US$ 0.80) per sheet, the rebels stashed their guns and took off their uniforms. When we arrived at a village called Sumbuya, which was about a kilometer from the main highway, they told us to sit, and put two or three of them to guard us. Then we'd wait until the SLA soldiers and ECOMOG soldiers, who you could tell by the marks on their faces and the way they talk, to come to buy from the rebels. A few times the SLA's and ECOMOG's came to talk with us; once they asked me what had happened to my arm and neck and I told them I'd been abducted and beaten. One of the other abductees, who was from my village, even knew one of the loyal SLA's and he pleaded with him to convince the rebels to release us. The loyal SLA said he was sorry and on our way back into the bush one of the rebels beat my friend and said they'd never take him to the highway again.

Do we know why the capital FREETOWN is now OVERCROWDED which also makes it difficult for the CITY to be cleaned?

The answer is very simple.

The SLPP government promised JOBS for its citizens, which they never did.

They promised rural development projects to help people living in those areas to get work and better living which never materialised.

Illegal immigration is also playing part. Some people have infiltrated FREETOWN and the rest of the country from other countries so that they will be registered and have the right to vote and rig the forth coming elections.

They als promised good schools, hospitals, health centres, clean water and electricity which never materialised.

If even they did, which I doubt, then it seems to me that the funds were diverted.

Overcrowding my brothers and sisters in Sierra Leone today, is caused by all what is stated above.

So, Ladis and Gentlemen, Brothers and Sisters, VOTE APC on JULY 28 for a better Sierra Leone and FUTURE.

Think of your children and grand children so that they will have a brighter future. We donot have time now to make big dances for you to ENJOY as our opponents are doing. The President was speaking as Guest of Honour at a March past in Freetown on Tuesday March 20.

The march past was the final event in celebrations to mark International Women’s Day (IWD), March 8. It was postponed to March 20 as the President who is usually the Guest of Honour at this event was away in Ghana attending that country’s 50th Independence anniversary celebrations.

This is a positive step by the COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES.

Women have been totally marginalised under the SLPP government. We have advocated all along for the rights of women through this FORUM and beyond.

Now that the COMMANDER IN CHIEF is maybe reading the articles of this forum, he will correct many things before he is sacked by the CONSTITUTION of Sierra Leone on JULY 28.

However he has done too little too late. If he had done that earlier may be he would now have past the 30% mark. Who knows, maybe he will change these remaining months and do some positive things. Surprises will not be excluded. He too wants to be remembered in the history of Sierra Leone for accomplishimg some thing.

FREETOWN (AFP) - Thousands of women in Sierra Leone on Tuesday rallied the authorities to speed up the adoption of new laws protecting them from violence and abuse.

Some 10,000 women thronged the national sports stadium in the small west African country's capital calling on the parliament to ensure that the bills are passed before the current legislature winds up ahead of the July general elections.

The proposed laws are aimed at stemming violence against women and girls in the family, the registration of customary marriages or divorces and the fair distribution of the estate in event of a spouse's death.

A recent study by a local non-governmental organisation, Gender Watch, found that 67 percent of urban women in Sierra Leone were regularly beaten by intimate male partners and over 50 percent reported having been forced to have sexual intercourse.

"While some violence does not leave the victim wounded, it often escalates and there are regular instances of violence to death or permanent disability," said the report published earlier this year.

"Under customary law, a husband has the right to administer reasonable chastisement to his wife.... He can beat her but not to the extent of wounding her," said the report.

Yasmin Fofanah, head of Mano River Union Women's Peace Network, told the Tuesday rally that "the bills are important for women of Sierra Leone to get these rights."

She urged President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, who will step down after the July elections, "to put your shoulder to the bills and leave them as your legacy. Give the women of Sierra Leone something concrete that we can remember you for."

The bills are yet to be tabled in parliament.

The one on inheritance and succession is aimed at protecting women in the event of the death of a husband.

"It will ensure that women have the right to participate in the distribution of their husband's estate, women and children will be protected so that they would not be evicted from their homes," said lawyer Susan Adams.

What an interesting article AFP. I am highly interested in womens struggle of what ever nature. That is why I gave KABA one point for taking the action he is now taking. If he succeeds in passing this bill will be a good business. Even if he will not be in power to make sure that it is implemented would have gone a long way.

To the women I say well done, but donot expect to get what you want overnight. Whether its the APC, PMDC or SLPP, it will not be easy. Infact not all men will understand what the law means. Some will even say that they will no longer but only have girl friends the women will claim their property or say in it if they seperate. Some of their demands will only work in a country where there is the one man one wife principle. Women will infact have more problems with marriage.

If we want to copy life in these rich coutries the so called first world, then we have to work hard. But we donot work.

Hear SLPP members all over the globe making dance all the time. They donot even consider the problems back home. It is better for them to make dance and use the proceeds to buy CONGO(JUNKS) or rice and distribut it freely to women and schoolchildren in remote Sierra Leone.

Somebody just hinted me a few days ago that some APC members in JAPAN and SINGAPORE did good things for WOMEN and children in rural Sierra Leone last year.

Pre- elections monitoring delegation from the National Democratic Institute (NDI) Monday told journalists at the Light House Hotel, Aberdeen that they are impressed with the level of turn-out in the just concluded voter registration exercise in the country.

In the statement read by a member of the delegation and former member of the United States (US) House of Representatives, Karan English said that, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) has stated that approximately two million Sierra Leoneans have registered, despite claims relating to distance and accessibility to registration centers in some regions in the country.

English added that the number is a demonstration of the people's commitment to participate in the country's democratic process especially with the preliminary data, which suggest that women and youths registered in large numbers.

She further said that her team ensured that sound procedures were put in place to prevent double, under-aged and alien registrations.

Paramount Chiefs, she recommended, should maintain neutrality and allow all political organizations in their chiefdoms especially during the campaign period.

“They should not use their positions to favour or disfavour any political party or candidate,” she said adding that after the resignation of Dr. Abdulai Timbo as Chairman of the Political Parties' Registration Commission (PPRC), there was a long delay to nominate and approve Dr. Timbo's successor, which prevented the Commission from functioning effectively.

She also stated that the slow disbursement of funds and recruitment of the Commission's staff is hampering the ability of PPRC to respond to its constitutional obligations.

The Ministry of Defence has reportedly implemented a very drastic action in an effort to clean the image of the military.This medium over the weekend learnt that three senior military officers of the Republic of the Sierra Leone Armed Forces have been dismissed from the service. Their behavior and conduct sources alleged can no longer be accommodated in the newly restructured RSLAF. The officers were carrying ranks ranging from Captain, Major to Lieutenant colonel. The affected officers received their dismissal letters last week in which the military wished them good luck in their new endeavours. They are former Commanding officer of the 14th Battalion based in the pujehun District Lt. Col. Emile Dumbuya alias “Savimbi”. The Adjutant of the Armed Forces Education Center (AFEC) Major S.M.A.S. Turay and the Company Commander attached to the 6th battalion stationed in the Moyamba District, Capt. F.F.J Vandy alias “Labota”. In the case of Lt. Col. Dumbuya, it would be recalled that in 2006 he was caught red-handed in his office having an affair with the wife of one of his junior officers. He denied when questioned by his superiors about the incident. This led to the institution of a commission of enquiry that found him guilty of the act. He would be remembered as one of the dedicated military personnel who defended his motherland during the eleven-year-old war.

Major S.M.A.S. Turay’s lust for money had sent him home prematurely. Sources alleged, he collected money to the tune of Le 400,000 from three non- commissioned officers who were in desperate need of a General Certificate Ordinary Level (G.C.E) results to qualify them to pursue a cadet training at the Benguema Training Centre. It was while in the training programme that the military launched what is known as “Operation Genuine Certificate”. To their greatest shock, it was discovered that the results they submitted to the military prior training had been faked and Major Turay was identified as the brain behind the production of fake G.C.E.O.Level results.

The non-commissioned officers who bribed him for the fake results had since been stripped off their ranks and asked to immediately distance themselves from the training programme

The time will come when they will be given media coverage.

All the woes of the NPRC began since the very first day of the take over. You see, that was why they could not rule Sierra Leone for long.

Let them look at the example of YAHYAH JAMMEH in the GAMBIA. None of the NPRC boys could not match his blessings. From soldier, he became president. He was then admired by a lot of Gambians. Even as I write, he has support.

Their are two things which make me disagree with YAHYAH JAMMEH:

One; When he recognised Bush as winner before even the Americans could pronounce the results and
Two, The controversial AIDS DOCTOR business which he is now facing.

On the contrary, I am suggesting that any member of the present military who is quilty for any wrong-doing should be sent to prison. The accident happened as the truck, packed with passengers and merchandise, was heading for a local market near the remote town of Gueckedou, more than 400 km (250 miles) southeast of the capital Conakry on Monday, the official said.

"There are 65 dead. A bridge collapsed under the weight of a truck carrying people who were on their way to a weekly market," the military officer, who asked not to be named, told Reuters.

French radio RFI said there were seven survivors.

Freetown - Political and rights groups cried foul on Monday over this weekend's ending of voter registration for July elections that will be a crucial test of Sierra Leone's post-war democratic credentials.

Electoral commission chief Christiana Thorpe said at least 72% of the targeted 2.7 million potential voters had been registered by the end of the three-week-long exercise.

"I think we have made it. This is the first time we have gone to such a high rate of registration for elections in Sierra Leone," she told a news conference on Monday, adding that any extension of the exercise was unnecessary.

But politicians and civil society groups claimed many people could not be listed due to logistical problems, saying some villagers had to walk about 10km to get to their nearest registration centre.

"An extension of registration would have done a world of good," said Henry Yamsanneh, a spokesperson for an opposition coalition.

The secretary general of the ruling Sierra Leone People's Party, Joseph Siaffa, said "an extension would have benefited all of us".

Road to recovery?

"A good number of the electorate may have been disenfranchised because of the locat1ons of some of the registration centres and poor logistics," said the Civil Society Movement of Sierra Leone, which comprises about 150 bodies.

The small west African country is due to hold presidential and legislative polls on July 28, which are will establish whether it is on the road to full recovery after a 10-year brutal civil war.

Electoral commission officials say it would cost the government more than $330 000 to prolong the registration period, which has been partly paid for by foreign donations

Is it true that most of the people who now work at the special Court for Sierra Leone do not really have the degrees they claim to have? Or am I just hallucinating? I am told that this body of people that is mandated to bring to justice "those who bear the gravest responsibility (what ever that means), are themselves fake people planted to to further milk on Sierra leone's already pathetic situation? I am told that a colleague of mine at FBC who did not even get a law degree (Not even ATP) is now parading and making more than $4000 as a lawyer of the Sp. Court while others who are actually lawyers cannot even get the job. This guy I know cannot even practice law in Freetown and yet is part of an international court which cannot even crosscheck its personnel's credential. I am more than shocked

Freetown, Sierra Leone, 19 March 2007 --- The Executive Representative of the Secretary-General in Sierra Leone commends the National Electoral Commission (NEC) for the voters' registration exercise, which began on 26 February 2006 and was concluded on 18 March.

The figures are still being collated. A more definite appraisal will only be possible when the final numbers are officially announced. The logistical and technical challenges were enormous, but the initial figures provided by NEC are encouraging and indicate that the voter information and sensitization efforts undertaken by the electoral authority, the media, including by the UN Radio in partnership with the community radios, and also by civil society organizations, were effective.

Special emphasis was given to preventing fraudulent registration. We noted that corrective measures were swiftly taken when errors or irregularities ensued, and suspects of attempting registration malpractice were called to account. The distance to voter registration centres in rural areas has been referred to as a constraint. We are sure that NEC will take this matter into account when planning for the polling day.

The people of Sierra Leone are the owners of the forthcoming July 2007 presidential and parliamentary elections and the efforts of NEC in accomplishing a successful registration, as a critical step towards these elections, should be recognized. The next steps will continue to be crucial in determining the overall credibility of the electoral register. MONROVIA, Liberia: Little that's worth anything makes it out of Liberia's war-wrecked ports these days — except rubber.

Three years after the end of a civil war allegedly bankrolled by stolen timber and diamonds, the gooey latex accounts for virtually all the West African country's exports. Rubber was the first commodity to return to market after the fighting, and the first to be targeted by ambitious government programs to redistribute Liberia's natural wealth.

The slow and violence-marked reform of the rubber sector shows just how challenging Liberia's return to healthy trade and resource management will be.

Abandoned rubber plantations have had to be wrested from former militiamen who forced those living on the land to work without pay. Bandits continue to sneak into privately owned plantations at night and covertly tap trees, wielding the acid used to coagulate the natural latex as a weapon against those who try to stop them.

And Firestone, Liberia's largest employer, is both courted and hated. The government urges the subsidiary of Japan-based tire giant Bridgeston Corp. to increase investment in the wrecked economy, while many of its 6,000 workers say the company pays too little.

"The problem of the struggle for the control of natural resources, it's manifested itself in the problem with the rubber plantations," says Alan Doss, the U.N. Special Representative to Liberia. "Reform carries risk. There are winners, but there are also losers — those who perhaps have lost what they saw was their right."

Illicit sales of timber and diamonds smuggled in from neighboring Sierra Leone allegedly funded the child soldiers and killing squads that tore apart Liberia from 1989-2003, leaving nearly a third of the country's 3 million people homeless.

Liberia recently celebrated its first year with an elected government since then-President Charles Taylor was chased out as part of a 2003 peace deal. President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has made resource reform a priority, reallocating land and renegotiating contracts both to get U.N. sanctions lifted and to prevent new fighting over lucrative exports.

Sirleaf canceled all timber concessions granted by previous governments and recently re-negotiated a contract with Mittal Steel Co. to develop iron ore mines under terms more favorable for Liberia. Iron exports started in small amounts in the second half of 2006.

Diamonds — a smaller resource in Liberia than in Sierra Leone but still potentially lucrative — continue to be banned by U.N. sanctions until Liberia shows that it can assure stones are tracked in to ensure they fuel no more wars.

Rubber was not subject to sanctions and exports have continued as reforms were put in place. From April through September 2006, rubber accounted for 94 percent of Liberia's exports, bringing in US$88.7 million. Figures were not available for the whole year.

As one of the few sectors bringing any money into a ravaged economy, the rubber industry is a target, along with its workers.

At the Firestone plantation a barely conscious man lies on a hospital bed with tightly wrapped gauze holding the skin onto his arms and hands. Doctors say he's lucky to be alive after a gang of illegal rubber-tree tappers threw acid on him and slashed his wrists with machetes. Moses Sumo's mangled hands will keep him from ever returning to work as a tapper.

Sumo was the 18th victim of such attacks — some deadly — at Firestone in just over a year. Firestone officials say they're doing their best to police the area, but rubber plantations are gigantic, and too many people are desperately poor.

Men crowd outside the Firestone offices for the hope of a job at one of the few working enterprises in the country, even as some of those with the sought-after jobs complain about wages.

Jean Fatu Stewart, head of the Firestone workers' union, says the tappers have trouble making ends meet, but backs up Firestone's claim that the company pays more than other work the tappers could be getting. Though unrest has prevented any real statistics gathering in Liberia for years, researchers and aid workers say unemployment continues to hover around 80 percent.

The lush, 200-square-mile (500 square-kilometer) plantation an hour's drive from the capital, Monrovia, feels like an oasis in a war-destroyed country. The company, which has been in Liberia since 1926, has started to replace dilapidated housing units, smooth over roads and order new textbooks for its schools — Liberia requires plantations to provide housing, medical care and schooling. With electricity more dependable than in the capital, Firestone even refrigerates vaccines used for U.N. inoculation programs.

Agriculture minister J. Chris Toe says the country needs to demand more investment from Firestone_ a tire plant for example, or better terms that will keep as much wealth in Liberia as possible. Toe said the contract with Firestone is slated to be re-negotiated this year.

Other large plantations sit in a kind of ownership limbo — relatively unpoliced as they wait for the government to find private investors it trusts to take over. Thomas Major, of the government-backed Rubber Planters Association that manages some plantations, said there are plenty of interested parties — but the approval process is long.

Meanwhile, temptingly high rubber prices mean thievery is hard to prevent. The spike in oil prices has made synthetic rubber more expensive, which in turn increases natural rubber prices. Liberia's rubber farmers say they can now sell a ton of natural rubber for about twice the price as in Taylor's time.

The Guthrie Plantation near the Sierra Leone border was taken over by former combatants in the transition years, and only wrested from the fighters in August. The Rubber Planters Association now oversees the enterprise, with U.N. soldiers standing guard to prevent another takeover.

In a sign of the strange turns rebuilding in destitute Liberia sometimes takes, Major said some of the former rebel fighters who had taken over Guthrie now work at the plantation as paid employees — tapping trees.

Smaller private plantation are operating, with owners trying to clear away brush and to tease latex out of trees a decade or two past their prime.

"The government is taking money from me," says Matthew Mangolie, who leases a 675-acre rubber plantation to make enough to develop another 700 acres he owns. He's complaining about taxes, which he doesn't think he should have to pay.

"The fighters have really destroyed the farms," Mangolie says, arguing that the government should be paying him to help redevelop the industry or else he'll get left behind while large companies like Firestone make all the profit.

Mangolie and Major, of the Rubber Planter's Association, drive a 4x4 along one of Liberia's newly repaired roads to inspect some overgrown plantations and argue about how to best save the agribusiness they've both invested so much in.

Major says the taxes are necessary, along with a lot of time: "We're in the stage where we're just going to be poor for a while."

With the voter registration process closed, political parties are vehemently complaining about the rabid incompetence and arrogant stubbornness of a nun-turned-electoral commissioner, Christiana Thorpe. All indications are that Christiana Thorpe, the electoral commissioner, seems to be conspiring either willfully or due to abysmal ignorance with other incompetent international organizations to disenfranchise rural populations in the forthcoming 2007 elections. Christiana Thorpe’s comes across as so arrogant and willfully deaf towards the many voices of reason that she should be stopped before she wreaks untold havoc on the nation. While Christian Thorpe exhibits such brazen arrogance and lack of respect for the rights of rural people, I believe strongly that it is the responsibility of the government to rein her in before things go terribly wrong. Things are already messy. Let us just imagine what will happen during and after elections.

IRRATIONAL REGISTRATION METHOD
It beggars belief that Christian Thorpe should insist on voter registration sites with an average distance of seven miles. Sources very close to Thorpe reveal that with the help of some westerners who know very little about Sierra Leone, she has decided to use Freetown as a model to set up voter registration sites that are clearly inaccessible to the majority of rural-dwelling people. Is it because Christiana Thorpe may have lived all her life in Freetown and she may not have even bothered to learn about the difficulties of travel faced by Sierra Leoneans outside Freetown? Any intelligent person should be able to know that traveling seven miles in Freetown is fundamentally different from traveling seven miles to a registration center in Kabala District. To overlook this seems to be a deliberate way of sending a message that Thorpe may have no respect for the rights of individuals in the provincial areas. The objective of voter registrations is to make it easy for eligible voters to register in order to exercise their constitutional right to vote. But that fact seems lost on Christiana Thorpe. What is the use of an election in the Eastern province, for instance, when it is alleged that ONLY 16% of eligible voters have registered to date? What does Thorpe gain by depriving 84% of eligible voters their constitutional right to vote? Is this not disenfranchisement because of the negligence of Christiana Thorpe? Would it serve her stubborn ego well after she would have orchestrated another robbery of the rights of rural people? May be the government should make Christiana Thorpe and her caboodle of third-rate western advisers walk seven miles to a registration center and back; then and only then would they begin to realize that our rural folks are also human. Some of those Westerners are from countries where voter registration can be done through the mail or online. They are very much aware of the importance of every voter or an overwhelming majority of voters registering to vote. But when it comes to their dealing with Africans, they prescribe a different paradigm that still smacks of the discourse of racism. Sadly enough they always have a local who colludes with them in their deliberately incompetent enterprise. It is easy picking for them, obviously. They have found Christiana Thorpe who is ready to molest the integrity of her very own people.

LAYING THE FOUNDATION FOR VIOLENCE
It seems as if Christiana Thorpe is refusing, albeit willfully, to discern the repercussions of her terrible handling of the voter registration process. If she is that naïve about the reason the opposition keeps raising issues about voter registration, let me throw this to her that it may be a warning to resort to violence. Opposition parties like PMDC and their leader Charles Margai have consistently threatened violence if they lose elections. Christiana Thorpe is just giving such parties a reason on a silver platter through her recalcitrance on extending and providing adequate opportunity for more voters, especially in the rural areas, to register. Opposition parties have long accused Christian Thorpe of trying to rig the elections in favor of the ruling party. Although there is not a scintilla of evidence for such accusation, Thorpe is clearly oblivious of the fact that her botched voter registration may just be the evidence some of these folks were looking for. Many people may have seen what may lay in the horizon after such a spectacularly incompetent display of organizing an election by Thorpe. As such civil society organizations like Campaign for Good Governance and the Council of Paramount Chiefs have called on her to extend the registration period. Reports indicate that Lady Thorpe said she is satisfied with the registration process. Can someone tell this ex-nun that we are not interested in her satisfaction but the satisfaction of the CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS OF THE SIERRA LEONEANS whose tax money is being used to pay her? Another reason that Thorpe has reportedly given is that there is no money. Can someone again tell her it is does not personally cost her anything to organize for Sierra Leoneans who want to register to vote. Having botched the process, must she not just report to the government and request more money for the process? This is yet another example of how civil servants quickly forget that they should serve the people and not their ego. Should opposition parties use the abysmal failure of Thorpe as an excuse for violence as promised by PMDC and Charles Margai? The people should hold Christiana Thorpe responsible.

GOVERNMENT’S ROLE
While the government should not interfere in the conduct of the voter registration exercise, it has the constitutional responsibility to protect the rights of citizens. As such, the government has an important role to play here. The government hired Thorpe to serve the people, but it seems Thorpe has gone deaf to calls from civil society organizations and paramount chiefs. It is time for the government to step in and order Thorpe to not only extend the voter registration exercise so that the overwhelming majority of Sierra Leoneans can register, but she should also make registration sites accessible to rural dwelling Sierra Leoneans wh do not have the luxury of vehicular transportation over long distances. Yes this is an intervention but it is extremely necessary to guarantee that the majority of Sierra Leoneans express a view on who should be their next leader. If Thorpe still believes the rural people should walk a total of fourteen miles to register, then perhaps we need another electoral commissioner who realizes that such methods will disenfranchise more people in the history of democratic elections in Sierra Leone than ever before. It also says very clearly that we may also need another electoral commissioner who realizes that our rural dwelling grandparents, mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters should be subjected to such hardship especially if it can be avoided as it is in this case. As such here are few suggestions for the government:
1. Extend the voter registration process for another two weeks whether Thorpe and her Westerners like it or not for the reason that the greater majority of Sierra Leoneans have not been able to register to vote because voter registration sites are inaccessible.
2. Be prepared to provide the resources and logistical (vehicles & other motorized or air assets) to ensure that voter registration materials reach the overwhelming majority of Sierra Leoneans.
3. Ensure that government serves the citizens of Sierra Leone well by protecting their constitutional right to vote.
4. Ask Christiana Thorpe to resign if she refuses to ensure that the majority of Sierra Leoneans get redress from a government that is willing and stands firmly to ensure that rural-dwelling Sierra Leoneans get the right to vote.
The government needs to step in to prevent an already chaotic situation from erupting into a violent one.

The voter registation exercise has been a nightmare.It has been extremely difficult to verify who should register where. Address is one difficult criteria to use, especially in the rural and urban centers. Ask a lot of Sierra Leoneans what their address is and all they can give you is a landmark. Some of the streets have no name and some of the houses not numbered. Thus it is very difficult to keep the voter’s registers clean.

Once there is registration fraud, there is bound to be vote fraud. Registration fraud precedes vote fraud and vote fraud is executed on the day of the elections. We should ask ourselves, why would anyone go to the trouble of committing registration fraud if they did not intend to follow through and commit vote fraud. Are we to believe that individuals commit registration fraud for thrills or simply as a practical joke? The existence of fraudulent registrations suggests the greater threat of a corrupt election, a danger that we dismiss at our peril. Voter registration fraud is a very clear demonstration of the SLPP's intention to rig the elections. I agree with Sia Tiayaama on the intentions of the SLPP, but differ on the tribal bias.

How comes it escapes Tiyaama that whether by design or coincidence, the incompetence and partially of Christiana Thorpe has given birth to illegal registrations at night. I think instead of Sia Tiyaama trying to play the political blame game, he should instead focus on those paying registrars to register people through smuggling. But again, what if Sia Tiyaama knows that Christiana is reportedly satisfy with the voter registration because she knows the game that is playing undercover, in the sense that SLPP will get all those needed (their own supporters) to register at night and deprive the opposition members to register in the day. Stephen Swaray, I know that you are considering the past. Let us forget the past and move forward. This is the new APC and there is something inside it which most people don't know. Donot follow what other people who are just against the APC with no just course are preaching around.

Just read the APC AGENDA in SHOW DOWN PART I thoroughly. It is a blessing for all Sierra Leoneans to have a party like the APC in exixtence today. The new APC is preaching exactly what the people of Sierra Leone did not get under the present SLPP. Donot wait to be told, consider seriously to join the new APC. I bet, you will never forget.

Is it not good for Sierraleoneans from 40 years old to get SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS? I do hope that you have parents who are old and could not do anything. May be you have the means to sustain them, but the majority donot. Listen, there are a lot of resources in Sierra Leone to let the APC fulfill its AGENDA. Some will be realised within the next four years and others by 2012 without delay.

So, what we are asking from people like you is to help us campaign. I guess you are SLPP. But that does not matter. What matters, is your will to join the APC. The sooner you start telling your party members about our plans, they will follow you immediately and even bless you. Let us all join hands together to make Sierra Leone APC on JULY 28 for total progress.

I would like to ask you if you want a position in our campaign team, for example PROPAGANDA SECRETARY for the APC within your party, be it the SLPP or that main rival of the APC which you know the PMDC.

If you accept, then your name will be published on SHOW DOWN PART II.

- Government subsidie on basic necessities(Rice, groundnut oil, etc..) including school materials(Books, Uniforms etc..)

- Increasing the minimum wage and the retirement age.

- Government subsidie on petrochemical products

- Long term loan for indigenous farmers(especially rice farmers)

- Complete overhauling of the medical system(subsidie on essential drugs and medical equipements)

- Reducing the present size of the cabinet.

- Building of low cost housing for the lower income.

- Restructuring our parastaltas.

- Setting up of the Sierra Leone stock exchange by 2012

- Social security scheme for people from 40 years and above.

The APC is now in full swing. The CAMPAIGN MACHINE is preparing and with PART II of SHOW DOWN ELECTIONS 2007, you will see that the APC is in top GEARS.

All of the stuff you have itemized as being on the APC agenda are items currently (or in the past) under our (the SLPP) purview. These items, such as the ones you have listed, and which I have pasted below, are all "deja-vu-items" as far as the SLPP is concerned:

- Electricity and Water supply for all(Including the completion of the BUMBUNA hydro electric project).

- Free education to all children by 2012.

- Government subsid[ie]y on basic necessities(Rice, groundnut oil, etc..) including school materials(Books, Uniforms etc..)

- Increasing the minimum wage and the retirement age.

- Government subsid[ie]y on petrochemical products

- Long term loan for indigenous farmers(especially rice farmers)

- Complete overhauling of the medical system(subsidy[ie] on essential drugs and medical equip[e]ment[s])

- Reducing the present size of the cabinet.

- Building of low cost housing for the lower income.

- Restructuring our parastatals.

- Setting up of the Sierra Leone stock exchange by 2012
[That is a new one].

- Social security scheme for people from 40 years and above.

Please come up with some new items on your apc agenda. Innovation is part of the SLPP character. Why can't you apc folks be innovative for once in your collective lives?

Sierra Leone has all the makings of a nation in transition from authoritarian rule to constitutional politics. As should be expected, there are multitudes of teething problems en route to democracy. It is safer for a nation to flounder while experimenting with constitutional politics than stay immovable in a dictatorial rot. We are therefore better now than we were during the days of "strong arm" rule.

What I find slightly disturbing is the lack of political innovation that is still making wastefulness a feature of our politics. We have quite a number of Ministries in Sierra Leone enjoying full cabinet ranks with little or no relevance to national development.

Here are just a few examples.
{1} We have the Ministry of FINANCE AND the Minsitry of "Development and Economic Planning." This Ministry, the one that supposedly talks about "Development and Economic Planning," is a white elephant and a needless source of bureaucracy in a country that needs lessons in fiscal responsibility. How EXTENSIVE and COMPLEX is little Sierra Leone's economy to justify having an auxiliary Ministry for "Economic Planning," running parallel to the Ministry of Finance?

{2} We have the Ministry of Marine Resources as well the Ministry of Mineral Resources. In sarcastic terms, can we have Ministries for Secondary Education as well as University Education? Again, a country that needs a change in national direction cannot afford a continuation with policies spurred by wastefulness. Is this happening due to a lack of saner political brains in Sierra Leone?
There are many more cabinet ranks in Sierra Leone that are as hurtful to the economy as the means of corruption they represent. Apparently, we are more willing to listen to ignorant, pot-bellied IMF officials with unrealistic financial commands, than we are ready to be moved by common sense. None of these brainless creations is as inexplicable as the reasons we may have for the Ministry of Finance AND its cliche-like cousin, that of Development and Economic Planning. Some Africans!

BRA TRUTH,
When it comes to fiscal responsibility, Sierra Leone--or any cash-starved African country--should NEVER have a Ministry of Economic Planning. It is a waste of resources. It takes a lot of badly-needed cash to sustain a Ministry that has the status of a full cabinet rank. A cabinet Ministry should either SERVE its nation, or face the prospects of being scrapped into oblivion.
I WONDER what the Minister of Economic Planning does all day in his office. Planning what aspect of the eonomy? I wish someone in State House could explain what economy needs to be planned in such a way that the Finance Ministry must have a stand-by Ministry to help manage our national economy.
It's a waste in every sense! This is a leftover from the APC's days of "Job for the Boys", and no one has had the political common sense to end this waste. It makes more common sense to pay teachers than spend money keeping cabinet Ministries that overlap in duty and function. I just can't stop wondering what the Economy Planner does all day in his office.

As always, humans in their natural niche, are cultivated not to be satisfied. I can say I have never remembered using derogatory remarks against any person in my life. I tend to think before I speak and I always try to avoid a vexatious spirit. praises should go to all of us and pray for those who believe that bad mouthing is a way to resolve a conflict. A national roundtable at Freetown’s Miatta Conference Centre on Friday, 16 March, brought together Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) delegates from all regions with high-level representatives from the United Nations, the National Electoral Commission (NEC), the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC) and Civil Society Organisations to consolidate the findings from regional seminars in a final Electoral Code of Conduct for Media.

One day later, on Saturday, 17 March, the document was ratified and signed by regional executive members of SLAJ, newspaper and magazine editors, radio and TV station managers. The national signing ceremony at the Miatta Conference Cetre was witnessed by Cabinet Ministers, leaders of political parties, senior members of NEC, the PPRC, the United Nations and diplomats, as well as by activists of national and international non-governmental organisations. The two-day event attracted also distinguished participants from across the country including traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, women and youth groups, trade unions, local councilors and members of the Armed Forces and Police.

The Executive Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and UN Resident Coordinator in Sierra Leone, Mr. Victor Angelo, emphasized the historic importance for the entire sub-region of this decision by Sierra Leonean journalists to adhere to self-regulatory factual and objective reporting that should be matched by a strong personal and collective commitment to uphold and observe the principles articulated in the Media Code of Conduct.

"The United Nations is engaged in this process, because we recognize the maturity and professionalism of the journalists in the country", Mr. Angelo said while he reiterated the determination of the UN to ensuring credible and transparent Presidential and Parliamentarian Elections set for 28 July 2007.

The Media Code of Conduct for the elections resulted from a collaborative effort between SLAJ, the United Nations Integrated Office in Sierra Leone (UNIOSIL) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The compliance of media with the Code is to be observed by a Monitoring and Refereeing Panel which will include members of SLAJ, NEC and the United Nations Country Team.

Mr. Alhaji I. B. Kargbo, President of SLAJ, said his Association’s formulation of a code of conduct is “part of a general goal to make sure that the elections do not get out of hand”. "The media has a key role in the upcoming elections, especially in informing voters about the main messages of the political parties. Journalists will be most effective in assuring successful elections if their contributions are within a self-regulated framework," Mr. Kargbo added.

In Sierra Leone the 2007 elections are widely regarded as a watershed in democratic development, because the country is still recovering from an eleven year long civil war. The Media Code of Conduct, therefore, timely complements the Political Parties Code of Conduct which was a collaborative effort between the UN in Sierra Leone and the Political Parties Registration Commission. The Political Party Code of Conduct was signed by eight active political parties on 20 November 2006.

In as much as our dedicated party supporters are helping to unearth the SLPP plans to rig elections, there are still wide spread voter irregularities in different parts of the Country.
The International Community is keeping quiet as the SLPP practices fraud and intimidation in the on-going registration exercise.
The present governmnet has made Sierra leoneans loose their ability to think squarely and has deprived them of basic amenities and yet the International Community is still not talking for ordinary Sierra Leones.

Right enough, the SLPP know that they will not win the forth coming elections without rigging. CHARLES MARGAI already warned during his tour to the US. Let alone ERNEST KOROMA.

BEREWA and the SLPP are failing to realise that peoples power is not like a rebel war or a MILITARY MUTINY. If BEREWA and his SLPP riged the coming elections, they will never live to remember why, because they will see the unseen of the people of Sierra Leone.

Their fear is that they will be faced with the SPECIAL COURT if they lose this election, because no one has an indemnity for this special court. See what happened with HINGA. Also, they fear that they should give account of their stewardship during the past decade and many more.

All what they promised the people did not materialised. Few months before elections, they put on the street lights. Is the SLPP a government to reckon with?

The truth of the matter though is that the APC and PMDC will not allow them. You see, they are vigilant, that's why they were able to uncover this fraud in TOMBO. This also shows that the whole voter REGISTERATION EXERCISE has been hijacked by the SLPP for maas fraud.

TOMBO is not the only area. There is a nation wide mass fraud on the VOTER REGISTERATION perpetruated by the SLPP.

SLPP must be eliminated from the forth coming election. I hope that ERNEST KOROMA and CHARLES MARGAI will take this TOMBO case very seriously.

You are fooling yourself. PMDC and APC already smell defeat. They are using fraud allegation as an excuse. Margai started screaming fraud even before the voter registration exercises started. This is the same thing he did before the SLPP convention. Instead of Campaigning to the delegates, he went around to San san boys and made all sorts of allegations. At the end of the day, he could not even beat JB Dauda or Marda Bio by much.
